Haberin tamamı
The global AI trade is staging a comeback, as a confluence of falling oil prices, Meta Platforms’ launch of a new agentic tool, and anticipation surrounding the China-US leadership summit reignite interest in technology stocks.
The Nasdaq-100 Index hit an all-time high on Tuesday, surpassing the previous record set in June. In Asia, China’s chip-heavy Star Market 50 Index and South Korea’s Kospi gauge, which is heavily weighted towards memory chipmakers, have been bouncing back since July sell-offs.
The shift appears to mark a reversal in negative sentiment surrounding artificial intelligence stocks, which had been battered by inflationary fears and calls from some US tech companies to slow the development of new AI models due to safety concerns. Market sentiment pivoted as oil’s retreat below US$100 a barrel eased inflationary pressure and as Meta’s Muse agent reinforced demand across the AI supply chains.
Meanwhile, positive rhetoric from a preparatory trade talk before the sit-down between President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump has fuelled optimism for a de-escalation of geopolitical tensions.
“Lower oil and lower yields reopened the duration trade,” said Stephen Innes, a managing partner at SPI Asset Management. “Meta’s agent story pushes AI beyond GPUs towards a wider compute trade built around inference, CPUs, cloud and digital labour.”
The regaining of market leadership by tech stocks underscores investor belief that the AI sector will withstand last week’s interest-rate increase in the United States and continue to sustain resilient earnings growth. The US Federal Reserve’s first rate hike in three years prompted caution in sectors outside technology, amid mounting concerns about squeezed profit margins linked to higher financing costs.
The retreat in oil prices amid diplomatic efforts to resolve the US-Israel war on Iran boosted risk appetite by alleviating investor jitters over further rate increases by the Fed. Crude fell for a sixth straight day on Wednesday after Trump said the US officials had “very good” meetings with Iranian representatives.
Meta’s 11 per cent surge in share price on Monday further validated the AI trade following the release of its Muse agent, which automates digital tasks on a user’s behalf. Muse downloads have soared, pushing it to the top of app charts.
The Muse frenzy “suggests markets read Muse as confirming sustained inference and server demand, not just another GPU headline”, said Gary Dugan, CEO of financial services firm The Global CIO Office.
Investors are now turning their attention to the gathering between Xi and Trump in hopes that the world’s two largest economies might extend a tariff truce and reach agreements on AI advancement or even the Middle East conflict.
“Preparatory meetings between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng suggest that some progress has already been made on trade,” said Robert Gilhooly, an economist at Aberdeen Investments. “That could pave the way for lower tariffs on some non-sensitive goods, while China may offer to buy more US farm products, energy exports and Boeing aircraft.”
